Bourbon whiskey is the most popular American version of this spirit barrel-aged distilled liquor made primarily from 51 % corn and stored in a brand new container of charred oak. The name derives from the French Bourbon dynasty and Bourbon Street in New Orleans which is named after the dynasty.

After the barrel has imbued its taste notes into the bourbon, the makers give to other distilleries that use them to age other liquors such as wine to create interesting flavor profiles.

What Is Bourbon?

Bourbon is a type of whiskey and a symbol of American tradition for long years. It contains at least 51% corn, and the remaining part consists of wheat, rye, malted barley. The reason behind the sweetness in the taste of Bourbon is the immense proportion of corn present in it.

What is the Difference Between Bourbon and Whiskey?

It is important for you to know the difference between bourbon and whiskey so you can decide which one to choose as per your desired taste.

Bourbon is actually a type of whiskey and both have a very similar taste. The main difference is that bourbon must contain a minimum of 51% corn while that is not the case with whiskey. The distillation process of Bourbon is much more detailed as compared to whiskey.

The law requires that the production of bourbon must be done in the United States.  The law imposes that the word “bourbon” shall not be used to describe any whiskey produced outside the USA.

It is a must for bourbon to be aged in new charred white oak barrels to maintain the unique taste that it comes with while it is not the case with whiskey. The premium Bourbons are kept for 2 years in the white oak barrels to get the real taste.

For Bourbon, the mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less. The storage of the distillate needs to be done at 125 proof or less and it must be additive-free.

Where does the Name Bourbon Come From?

Origins of the name are uncertain but most probably it comes from Bourbon County in Kentucky. For a bourbon to be designated a "Kentucky bourbon", it is a must that the distillation and barreling process is done in the state of Kentucky.

How To Drink Bourbon?

The best way to drink bourbon is to go either neat or on the rocks. Neat means to go for the drink without adding anything to it, neither soda, water, nor ice cubes. On the rocks is to take the drink with ice cubes.

The real taste will come when you take it in the purest form as you will be able to thoroughly enjoy your drink and feel the essence of what Bourbon tastes like.

If you don’t like going neat or on the rocks, you can go with a small addition of sugar but try to avoid adding anything in more proportion as it will be dilute the original taste.
